課程概述

世界充斥著物(object, thing, artifact, material, materiality),但也處於物匱乏的狀態;人們因物而感到厭膩,卻又持續渴求著物。物構成人類的存在條件,甚至也是人類存在的內涵。人類的身分認同通過對於物的認知、辨識、分類、佔有、分派、轉移、食用、餽贈、符號化、象徵化、神聖化、污名化、禁忌化、排斥、排泄等機制而構成和轉變。自然物、人造物、科技物、聖物或棄物,既是人類社會產物,又是構成社會的因素,甚至是推動社會轉化的重要動力。最終,人本身也是物,既是血肉之軀的物,也是特定社會關係下,對象化、物化或異化或臣屬的物。另一方面,人類往往會將特定物件予以擬人化、主體化,從而形成複雜異質而難以區分的主體與客體關係;各種科技的發展,特別是自動化機器和人工智慧的進展,更是迷糊了人與非人的邊界。於是,相較於西方啟蒙理性下鮮明的主體和客體二分,以及對於(人類)主體自主性的追尋,晚近學界開啟了物質轉向(material turn),關心各種物質在人類社會中繁複多樣但根本的作用。

本課程將引介馬克思(Karl Marx)和佛洛依德(Sigmund Freud)的古典物質關切,特別是物化、對象化、異化、拜物教、戀物癖等概念所擾動的人與物之關係;接著,布希亞(Jean Baudrillard)的物體系,則開啟以消費社會中符號化之物為核心的提問。在鋪陳了馬克思主義、後結構主義,以迄物質符號學的主客體構成後,我們將進入物質文化(material culture)研究的豐富場域,聚焦於各種理論取向和概念的經驗運用,包括身體感官、物質實作、人與物的關係、建築與營造環境等議題。然後,接軌科技與社會研究(Science, Technology and Society, STS)的關切,進一步探討建築、設計與物質之間的道德關係和權力。最後,本課程引介當前以物質及科技物為主角的新研究取向,在關係和實作存有論之基礎上,強調物作為非人行動者的能動性、生機活力及政治性,以拉圖(Bruno Latour)、哈曼(Graham Hartman)、本涅特(Jane Bennett)等新物質論(new materialism)學說,以及「物導向存有論」(object-oriented ontology, OOO)為代表。
 

課程目標
具體而言,本課程目標在於令修課者
(一)掌握物與物質理論的重要概念和分析視角;
(二)通過閱讀、報告、討論和實際課題研究,學習運用既有理論概念來探討社會和物質的關係;
(三)通過實際議題的探討和掌握,摸索與既有理論取向對話的可能性。
 
課程要求
■ 課程要求:

盡力閱讀課程材料,勇於發問,勤於出席。修習者的投入與表現,對本課程能否順利運作非常重要。本課程採取講演和討論課(seminar)並行方式,每次上課由教師講授和提示重點,並由參與者分配導讀該週的閱讀材料,每篇文章報告時間,必須控制於十五分鐘,盡量留時間發問和討論,探討能跟理論概念對話的經驗議題。報告者必須分發書面提要(必須包含三百字以內之摘述,主要論點和論證邏輯之說明【配合論證圖示】,以及評論和問題)。
沒有分配到當週閱讀材料導讀的同學,則需繳交針對某一篇或全部閱讀材料的讀書心得和提問,至少一頁。旁聽的同學,不需分配閱讀材料的導讀,也不必繳交作業,但是必須每堂課繳交讀書心得和提問。

本課程的設計份量,需要修課者在課堂外花費四倍以上的時間,也就是3 X 4=12個小時,包括閱讀教材、撰寫摘要或讀書心得及提問的時間。

各項報告須準時繳交,遲交一天扣五分,但以扣除五十分為上限。繳交時間明定於各周進度中。但期末報告不得遲交。

課程報告摘要和心得提問,須於上課前(當天下午4: 00)以前上傳至Ceiba課程網頁討論區。

■ 摘要寫作要點:

書面摘要必須於首頁列明報告文獻(APA格式)、日期、報告人,先有三百字摘要,述明整篇文章的問題意識和主要論點。然後是經過消化的、條理分明的內容概述。換言之,不宜逐段摘譯,最好是整理出文中討論的主要問題,以及作者對這些問題的回答或爭辯,建議以圖表方式整理出主要的論證架構,也可以搭配一些圖片,譬如說作者照片、書影或文中提到的人物和事件圖片。如果直接引述文中語句或段落,必須以不同字體清楚標示,並加註頁碼。最後,必須針對文獻內容提出問題,或是可供延伸討論的經驗議題。

該研究須以經驗材料為基礎,適當運用本課程提到的理論和概念。該項作業的具體題目必須事先與教師商議,並撰寫一份期末報告計畫書,說明問題意識、相關文獻和研究方法等(三頁)。建議期末報告之主題與小作業題目有所關連。期末報告之規格和排版須符合學術要求,可參照《台灣社會學刊》的格式。完稿必須包含中英文題目、中文摘要和關鍵詞等項目,字數約一萬五千字(一萬字至兩萬字內)。學期中先繳交計劃書,學期結束前約三周繳交初稿,學期最後一次上課繳交完稿。期末報告計劃書5%,期末報告初稿20%,期末報告完稿10%,合計35%。

小作業:以物為焦點的物與人關係 
15% 
選擇一個物(自然物、人造物,以人為物),仔細描繪這個物的構造、特質、演變及作用等,並藉此討論該物和人的關係。盡量配合該物之圖片或解剖圖,以及物作用的圖示。此物可以是某個類型的物,或是特定的一個物。字數以三千至五千字為度。本作業佔學期成績之15%。
